A Better-for-You Margarita for Cinco de Mayo

A Better-for-You Margarita for Cinco de Mayo

Cinco de Mayo, as celebrated in the U.S., doesn't exactly possess a reputation for to be the healthiest day on the calendar. Also known as Battle of Puebla Day, Cinco de Mayo, which falls on a Sunday this season, celebrates the date from the Mexican army's 1862 victory over France in the Battle of Puebla throughout the Franco-Mexican War – May 5th.

While a fairly minor vacation in its country of origin, within the U.S. Cinco de Mayo has ballooned right into a large-scale celebration of Mexican heritage, particularly in areas with significant Mexican-American communities. In these communities, May 5th is marked with parades, parties, and traditional music, dancing and food. And elsewhere? Cinco de Mayo is known to be much more of a drinking holiday than the usual celebration of victory. But whether you're celebrating your heritage or just reveling within the holiday that often seems like the kick-off towards the summer months, there's a better method to sip.

Often the crowd favorite for Cinco de Mayo celebrations, the margarita is really a bar and party classic that's undeniably tasty – although not exactly a healthy choice with regards to your wellbeing. The mixture of sugary mixers and juices with dehydrating alcohol means a single margarita could have as much as 25g of sugar within the mix – that's about 6 teaspoons, or close to the entire suggested daily sugar allotment to have an adult male. And what's so bad about everything sugar? Along with spiking blood sugar, which leads to a rollercoaster of cravings and moods, an excessive amount of sugar could lead to brain fog, gut imbalances, and much more. Superior to that mixed margarita? Choose a good-quality tequila – one that you really enjoy the taste of instead of the bottom-shelf stuff – and compliment it with bubbly seltzer and spicy kombucha for a festive kick. Not only is this choice much lower in sugar, however the addition of seltzer supports hydration – an important factor considering how dehydrating alcohol can be. Just remember to sip water on the side, too. Ready to combine your new favorite Cinco de Mayo drink? Grab our recipe below and we’re sharing a lot of our favorite no-sugar mixers for people who should you prefer a mocktail.

Seedlip may be the “world’s first distilled non-alcoholic spirit” and currently has 3 flavors within their range. We recommend using their Grove 42 flavor profile for a margarita-esque drink. It is a great alternative for individuals who prefer not to or aren't able to consume alcohol.
